Issues regarding urbanisation have been debated in the United Nations since the 1970s and the importance of addressing urbanisation was further acknowledged in 1978 with the establishment of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme –commonly referred to as UN-Habitat. The programme is a part of United Nations Development Group and its goal is to promote - socially and environmentally- sustainable urban living spaces.
In 2015 the member states of the UN approved the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); which includes SDG 11, “Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.” Today UN-Habitat creates a sustainable urban environment for all peoples by creating various projects that focus on issues ranging from climate change to safety in urban environments.
